How to use your Panchang A short guide to the names and timings

Choose your city first: the times follow its local clock, including daylight saving. Some intervals continue after midnight, so check the date printed below each time.

The five calendar factors
Tithi is the lunar day, Nakshatra the Moon’s lunar star, Vara the weekday, Yoga a Sun–Moon combination and Karana half a lunar day. Read them together.
Brahma Muhurta
A quiet pre-dawn period traditionally used for meditation, prayer or study. It changes with local sunrise.
Sandhya periods
Morning, midday and evening observances that give the day a rhythm for prayer or reflection.
Abhijit and Vijaya
Traditional midday and afternoon periods considered for beginnings. Their names do not override an overlapping caution.
Godhuli and Nishita
Brief sunset and middle-of-the-night ritual periods. Follow the requirements of the particular observance.
Choghadiya
Eight divisions of daylight and eight of the night. The two sequences differ. A favorable name alone does not settle suitability.
Varjyam and Amrit Kalam
Caution and supportive intervals within the Moon’s lunar star, calculated from that star’s actual duration.
Chandrabalam and Tarabalam
Moon-sign and birth-star support. Use your birth Moon sign and birth Nakshatra, not your Western Sun sign.
Choosing an important ceremony
The free calendar gives the day’s general factors. A wedding, home entry or other major beginning needs the event and personal birth charts considered too.
